Sinds enige tijd is het stuk ‘Kijk mama, ik dans’ op de planken in Belgische en Nederlandse theaters. Het is – voor zover mij bekend – het enige stuk in het Nederlands taalgebied over dit onderwerp.

De Vlaamse actrice Vanessa van Durme vertelt met het nodige theatrale drama in ‘Kijk mama, ik dans‘ het verhaal van haar eigen leven. Het is een verhaal zoals veel transseksuelen zullen herkennen. Niet alleen de transitie en het zoeken naar een eigen – nieuwe – plek in de wereld speelt een rol maar ook de relatie tot haar ouders. Tegelijk is het een verhaal dat vele lotgenotes juist niet zullen herkennen. Niet elke transseksueel heeft te maken met prostitutie en travestie, bij niet elke transseksueel is het een bal van pruiken en valse wimpers zoals dat bij deze actrice wel schijnt te zijn geweest. De recensies en de website van het stuk geven mij in ieder geval een dubbel gevoel van respect met herkenning tegen afstand en vervreemding. Dat gevoel verdween tijdens de uitvoering volledig door de briljante wijze waarop Vanessa speelt.

For a couple of years now the theatre play ‘Look mama, I’m dancing’ is brought to the Belgian and Dutch stages. For as far as I know it’s the only Dutch language play on the topic of transsexuality.

The Flemish actrice Vanessa van Durme tells the story of her own life in a dramatic and theatrical fashion. It’s a story that will be recognized by many transsexuals. Not only the transition and the search a new – own – spot in the world plays a major role in the play but also the relationships with her parents. At the same time it’s a story that many companions will not recognize. Not every transsexual has had to deal with prostitution and travesty, not for every transsexual i’s a game with wigs and false eye lashes as it seemed to have been the case with this magnificant actrice. Reading comments about the play gave me a double feeling but that quickly disappeared by the stunning performance of Vanessa. The play is being performed both in French and Dutch versions and there are solid plans for German and English language versions and a world tour.
